Krista’s Story

Posted on by Tacoma YFC

At Tacoma Youth for Christ, we are committed to kids. God has placed within us a desire to present the Gospel message to the youth in our community and walk with them, ministering to them, encouraging them, and sometimes just simply being their friend. However, did you know that we also take that same approach with those who decide to volunteer with us? There cannot be enough said about the heart that God has placed within these special people as they are the core of this ministry. The following is a brief account of one of our volunteers at Remann Hall. I pray that as you read it, you are also listening to what God is saying to you.
_____________

When I started volunteering with the Juvenile Justice Ministry at Remann Hall, I felt ill-equipped because I have never been through what most of these girls have experienced.  I’m also on the quiet side when it comes to personalities. I’m definitely a people-person, but I’m more of a one-on-one type of person.

I have found out the girls are very sweet and generally open to me being there. I’m not sure why, but I was surprised to see their innocence, that they are just young girls, new to this big world. They like to know that someone cares and is there to listen. I am still learning by trial-and-error each week that I see them. It is really up to God and nothing important will happen unless I allow the Holy Spirit to guide me. I try to prepare each week, but it is God who shows up and knows what is needed for these girls to feel loved and valued.

Each week, as I pray for them, meet with them and try to encourage them, I feel changed by God. As His daughter, I also sense him urging me to see His love and care in my life in a deeper way in spite of my flaws, weaknesses, insecurities and even sin.

“I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it to the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” - 2 Corinthians 8:8
